Announcing "Within and Without: Wonderings of a Sheeted Figure"

An exhibition of my new work, titled Within and Without: Wonderings of a Sheeted Figure, is happening November 9—December 23, 2017 at JayJay Gallery, Sacramento, CA, with an opening reception on Thursday, November 9, 5:00—7:30 pm.

Jon Lynn McCallum combines digital and hands-on processes to transform and rebuild his photographic images. Through his process McCallum uncovers realms of contradictions: feeling/intellect, imagination/reality, past/present/future. He describes these as, “frail liminalities of human being.” McCallum aims to empathize with the human spirit in spite of misgivings, inconsistencies that develop these contradictions. Through the act of making, McCallum creates an awareness of the individual self and the outside world in order to affirm the essence of being.

Playing the Role of Juror, Redding, CA

I was honored to be the juror for the North Valley Art League’s Regional Photography Show this year. My first time in this role, I delighted in seeing artwork from an entirely new perspective. The first step was simply selecting the most interesting images for the show—the fun part. The difficulty came when, once the show was on display, I had to select the “best” work. Considering there were no specific categories, such as “Best Portrait” or “Best Landscape,” and that the entries were so varied, the task was not easy. To view the winners and my reasons, please visit here, or for the overall exhibition, go here. Enjoy!

"Lovers and Flowers" on Display in Redding, CA

"Lovers and Flowers" is a recently designed repeatable pattern overlaid with several textures to illustrate the never-ending, give-and-take nature of relationships. Whimsical, yet profound.

This work, along with a few others of mine and several of the art faculty, is on display from November 28 to December 9 at the 67th Annual Art Faculty Exhibit at Shasta College Art Gallery in Redding, CA. Come and see!

"Sheeted Figure on Couch with Book" Appears in Dunsmuir, CA

One of my new works, Sheeted Figure on Couch with Book, has been selected for Between the Covers: Art Inspired by Books, an exhibition being held at the Siskiyou Arts Museum in Dunsmuir, CA until October 2, 2016.

I wrote the following statement about the image:

The sheeted figure resists the camera of our culture by literally taking cover. He finds comfort in books for they are objects which resemble his own inner-outer nature. He knows that we are so much more than how we appear.

"Sheeted Figure in Room with Cone" Appears in Redding, CA

My image “Sheeted Figure in Room with Cone” was chosen to be in the North Valley Art League’s International Juried Photography Show. The exhibition is held at the Carter House Gallery in Redding, CA, from May 3 to June 4, 2016, with a reception on Saturday, May 7, from 6 to 8pm. I am excited to see the exhibition in person as the NVAL site is showing some very interesting imagery by artists from all over the world!

About this image...

The sheeted figure confronts, and yet denies, the probing eye of photography. Countering our material culture, the figure seems to say, “Know me by my voice––by what’s inside of me––by who I really am––rather than mere appearances.”
As a child I experienced difficulty in speaking and in being understood by others, and this informed my sense of self and my perceived ability to navigate through the world. A strong and mysterious force, the human voice has thus become a lifelong curiosity and is regarded as both a transmitter and a metaphor of our human essence.
